Support Our Work

A National Voice is the only organisation in England run by and for young people from Care. We provide young people an opportunity to speak out on the issues most important to them. At any one time, 60,000 children and young people are in Care.

"ANV is a wonderful organisation, promoting powerful and important messages for us all."

— Lord Laming

What are some of the issues facing children and young people from Care?

  • 54% of young people left Care without any GCSE/GNVQ qualification; only 6% got 5 GCSEs at Grades A*-C in comparison to 50% of all young people.
  • As few as 1% of young people leaving Care go on to university.
  • Estimates for the number of 16-24 year olds from Care who are unemployed range from 50% to 80%.
  • 17% of young women leaving Care are pregnant or already mothers.
  • Looked-after young people are over-represented in the youth-justice system and in populations of people who are homeless or have slept rough.

"Being involved with ANV has given me a golden opportunity to get my voice heard in Parliament and other places and has really helped my confidence. Every young person from care should know about ANV"

— Young person from Care (18yrs)

Who and What Is A National Voice?

Since 1999 we have been making positive changes to the Care System, and have already consulted over 2,000 children and young people from Care. We create campaigns, provide advice, raise public awareness, promote best practice, highlight positive role models and produce reports and feedback to influence policy makers and Government.

Our Board of Directors is made up of Care-experienced young people who direct the aims and objectives of our work. We currently have paid staff based in Manchester and London and we have received a basic core grant from the DfE - although we have no guarantee this will continue. Our CEO is also Care-experienced.

A National Voice is regarded as a credible, reliable source of young people's views, and handles regular enquiries from:

  • Children and young people
  • Government bodies and Social Services professionals
  • Partner organisations (Barnardos, Prince's Trust, NCH amongst others)
  • Media (We are regularly featured in The Guardian, The Times, BBC Radio and TV etc and our website gets approx 30,000 hits each month)

"ANV is organised and led by young people from Care. It shows what young people can do when they get the chance and demonstrates the importance of this organisation."

— Hilton Dawson, CEO Shaftesbury Children's Homes (MP 1997-2005)

We can only sustain and develop our work with support from individuals, organisations and groups. With your help ANV can grow into a true network across all 9 English regions.

SAY WHAT?

"...Please pass on how impressed I was (and everyone else I spoke to was also impressed) with how the young people delivered the session and the messages they put across were thought provoking and very helpful to think about how to be a good social worker – they were brilliant..."

Danielle Howlett,
 Kirklees Council
